Australian Institute of Marine Science – National Sea Simulator
About the Project
The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) is Australia’s tropical marine research agency. Located in a scientific zone and surrounded by a National Park and marine reserve in Townsville, Queensland, AIMS’ headquarters is perfectly positioned near the centre of the Great Barrier Reef. Omnii is providing Fire Engineering Services on the expansion of the AIMS National Sea Simulator (SeaSim) research aquarium facility.
Established in 1972, AIMS plays a pivotal role in providing large-scale, long-term and world-class research that helps governments, industry and the wider community to make informed decisions about the management of Australia’s marine estate.
The Institute is committed to improving tropical marine health, creating national benefit, and protecting coral reefs from climate change.
Using SeaSim, the most advanced research aquarium in the world, Australian and international scientists can research the impact of complex environmental changes with large, long-term, experiments in which they can manipulate key environmental factors including light, temperature, acidity/pCO2, salinity, sedimentation and contaminants.
AIMS is currently using SeaSim for research including future marine ecosystems under a rapidly changing climate, marine diseases and pests, and sediment and pollution from farming, urbanisation and industry.
